What is Furikake?

Rice seasoning is called Furikake in Japan.

The definition of Furikake【ふりかけ】 is that one or several mixtures of dried marine products, agricultural products, livestock products and seasoning them.

Depending on the concept, adding dried seaweed or sesame.

There are hundreds of Furikake in Japan. Made from traditional ingredients and interesting ingredients like Sukiyaki or Natto.

Usually, Furikake is topped on staple food or mixed with rice.

Furikake was created in Taisho-era (from 1912 to 1926). The amount of food was insufficient at that time. Yoshimaru Suekichi who was a pharmacist at Kumamoto prefecture worried about lacking Japanese calcium intake and created Furikake. The first Furikake was so simple. He dried and crumbed small sardines, seasoning it and mix roasted sesame, poppy seeds, dried seaweed.
